Invisalign FAQs
Here, we share the answers to some of the questions patients often ask.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of clear, custom-fitted aligners that straighten teeth without metal wires or brackets.
During the consultation, we will use advanced 3D computer imaging technology to create a treatment plan based on your smile.
Custom clear aligners will be manufactured to fit your teeth precisely during the Invisalign treatment process.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign clear plastic aligners are designed to move your teeth in tiny increments as your treatment progresses. You will wear each aligner for about two weeks before replacing it with the next one in the series.
This process will continue until your teeth are in their new, prescribed positions in accordance with your treatment plan. Your dentist will determine the duration of your Invisalign treatment based on your specific needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Your dentist will determine the duration of your Invisalign treatment based on your unique needs.
Factors that may impact the length of your treatment include the severity of the misalignment of your teeth or jaw, the shape of your bite, and the amount of movement required to correct the problem.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
Invisalign clear aligners are made of medical-grade, high-molecular-weight thermoplastic polymers that are free of latex, parabens and Bisphenol A (BPAs).
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Since Invisalign aligners require no adjustments or tightening, you will switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks. Your dentist will schedule brief appointments with you every four to six weeks.
During these visits, your dentist will review your progress and general oral health, answer your questions, and adjust your treatment as needed.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
The features of Invisalign include:
- A discreet, low-profile appearance
- Smooth design for a comfortable fit
- No adjustment appointments are needed
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost will depend on the severity of your case and the duration of your treatment. For instance, the more severe the orthodontic issue, the more aligners you'll need, which can increase the cost of your treatment.
In many cases, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to that of traditional orthodontic treatment (braces).
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
For many patients, Invisalign fits well into day-to-day life. You can take your aligners out whenever you need to.
That means no dietary restrictions, and you'll be able to brush and floss thoroughly and consistently.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
The good news is that you can remove your Invisalign clear aligners. As a result, there are no dietary restrictions, so you can continue to eat your favourite foods.
We recommend removing your clear aligners to avoid staining them when you consume beverages such as wine, coffee, or dark sodas.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
Each orthodontic case is different. More complex issues often require longer treatment plans. The longer you need Invisalign, the more sets of aligners you'll need.
Only your dentist can accurately estimate how many aligners you will need based on a careful evaluation of your bite during an initial consultation.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Any adult with healthy teeth and gums can use Invisalign clear aligners.
More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment, largely because options like Invisalign have become available.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign clear aligners. To meet the unique needs of teenagers, Invisalign has created a special line of aligners.
Invisalign Teen aligners have small blue dots (compliance indicators) that fade away after they are worn for two weeks, helping teens stay on track with their treatment.
They also come with eruption tabs that provide space for second molars and prevent them from growing crooked.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Your dentist will tell you exactly how often you should switch out your aligners. For most patients, this happens around every two weeks.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
Good oral hygiene is key to maintaining healthy teeth and avoiding cavities and decay. Failing to brush and floss properly can trap food debris and bacteria between your teeth and aligners, increasing your risk of dental problems and bad breath. Along with rinsing your aligners each time you remove them, there are a few other cleaning steps you can follow to care for your aligners properly and maintain good oral hygiene:
- Soak your aligners using a denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, and/or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals.
- Brush and floss your teeth before you put your aligners back in.
- Clean your aligners with a clear, anti-bacterial soft soap.
- Brush your aligners gently to not scratch them, and then rinse off the soap.
Now you are all set to pop your aligners back in!
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Yes. You can remove your Invisalign clear aligners while you play sports. This will prevent any potential damage.
However, remember that Invisalign aligners must be kept in for at least 22 hours daily for successful treatment, so plan your time carefully.
You'll also want to invest in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth. Orthodontic treatment can cause teeth to loosen slightly as they shift into new positions, making them more susceptible to damage.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes. You can easily remove your Invisalign aligners while you are playing your instrument. Just make sure you put them back in once you are done.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners will come with a case, which you should put them in whenever you take them out to keep them safe.
